Artificial SmartHeart Could Help Many

New artificial heart, currently in clinical trials, could help many and improve quality of life

About 2,500 patients in the United States receive a heart transplant annually, and more than 25,000 people die every year while waiting for a donor heart.

Cleveland Clinic Biomedical Engineer Leonard Golding, MD, talked to Channel 3 News about the development of the SmartHeart Total Artificial Heart. Designed for long-term, durable use, he says it is smaller than current artificial hearts and could be available for the many heart failure patients in about five years.
