Weekend Diet Advice

How to avoid weekend indulgences that derail a healthy diet

If you’re a weekend warrior who’s pretty good about eating a healthy diet during the week, you’re off to a good start.

But if you let that diet slide after a hard workout or game on your off days, you’re fumbling at the five-yard line.

Amy Jamieson-Petonic, RD, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic, says many people derail their healthy diets on the weekend.

“People think that if they’re good during the week, they can eat whatever they want on the weekend,” says Jamieson-Petonic. “That’s really not going to help you meet your plan.”

Jamieson-Petonic shares some tips for cutting calories from your weekend diet:

  • Stay away from sugary drinks like soda pop and fruit juice
  • Load up on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables
  • Stick with lean meats like turkey, chicken or fish for your protein sources
  • Track what you eat with a seven-day food diary

With a better diet, you’ll feel better on the weekend, too, making it easier to get up off the couch and get active.
