Dr. Stanley Hazen, Section Head of Preventive Cardiology replies:

“A plant based diet is low in cholesterol and saturated fats, and believed in general to be healthy. However, there are no rigorous studies demonstrating “reversal” of atherosclerotic plaque other than anecdotal cases.

Your decision of whether to adhere to such a diet should be discussed with your physician.

In general, I recommend to my patients that a diet should be a life choice they can accommodate and still enjoy life with, not a religion….

I suggest that patients only adopt a strict plant based diet if they feel quite strongly about it, and do so in conjunction with a trained and certified registered dietician. I reitierate that it is very difficult to adhere to, and the benefits are unproven.

I believe a common sense approach to diet that is more balanced, and incorporates aspects of increased vegetarian component, is equally reasonable.”
