The science of which foods are — and aren’t — good for your heart can seem to be ever changing. Recent studies have been coming so fast that keeping up starts to feel like mission impossible.

The good news is that there’s still more agreement among experts about the basics of diet and the heart than some hype-driven headlines might suggest. Two Cleveland Clinic cardiologists, Steven Nissen, MD, and Stanley Hazen, MD, PhD, helped develop this checklist of where today’s evidence stands on the heart effects of some high-interest food types and nutrients.
