However, the STAMPEDE trial, designed to test this surgery’s effect on type 2 diabetes, showed that the benefits go far beyond weight loss. In the trial, gastric bypass patients lost five times as much weight as patients who received medications and lifestyle counseling. They were far more likely to be free of diabetes after two years, and perhaps most important, their dependence on medications went way down.

Many diabetes experts now believe that weight-loss surgery should be offered much earlier as a reasonable treatment option for patients with poorly controlled diabetes — and not as a last resort.
