Americans had little control over how they died 100 years ago. Medicine was helpless against most infectious diseases. Doctors had theories; most were wrong. Today, we have the knowledge to prevent common causes of death like heart disease, some cancers and strokes. Yes, we all have to die someday; but not of the same old things.
