In their book, Heart 411, Drs. Gillinov and Nissen say:
Recent research suggests that this old rule of thumb is too simplistic and is often incorrect. While weight loss does depend upon a combination of diet and exercise to put you in a negative calorie balance, cutting 500 five hundred calories per day won’t cause people to lose one pound per week, week after week. As you lose weight, hormonal and energy changes in your body combine to slow the rate of weight loss. Don’t be discouraged by initial rapid weight loss that then seems to slow down. This is normal. Stick to your plan and you will continue to lose weight over time. Lose weight for the long term.
